As I mention on my About page, ever since I saw an editorial fashion story in Vogue I have been captivated by all things fashion. The magazine continues, till this day, to be an aspirational source of creativity for me.
Last Saturday I attended British Vogue‘s fourth annual Vogue Festival which is a chic two-day event held at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington, London. The festival features talks and activities aimed to educate and inspire it’s fashionista attendees, lead by some of the most respected names in the fashion industry. In the past I have had the pleasure of listening to photographic hero’s such as David Bailey and Tim Walker as they share their wealth of knowledge and expertise.
This year’s Festival hosted masterclasses so participants could gain more one-on-one interaction with the key speakers and industry insiders. Unsurprising, the masterclass that interested me the most was all about fashion photography and being a firm believer that “everyday is a school day” I signed myself up for what would be a very informative and inspirational day.
The speakers leading the fashion photography masterclass were none other than Vogue’s creative director Jaime Perlman, picture editor Michael Throw, art director Felix Neill, fashion photographer Rory Payne and his assistant Lewis Hayward whose work is regularly featured in Vogue. Alongside that line up was photography agent Camilla Lowther of CLM.
The advice these influential experts gave was priceless and refreshing. They all encouraged self-worth, positivity, respect, thoughtfulness and the importance of team work, words you might not necessarily associate with the fashion industry due to the bitchy stereotypes portrayed by the likes of The Devil Wears Prada.
The underlying message throughout all six introductions was to develop an authentic identity based on passion, as well as build a strong working relationship with people who you trust and believe in. Added to that message was never stop learning and practice, practice, practice!
Sound advise no matter what industry you work in, I’m sure you will agree?
